Hanova celebrates Movember for charity

By Mr Martin Hughes

Dear Parents and

Philippine Disaster fund. Currently, Hanova Student Council is planning fundraising projects to assist victims of the typhoon disaster in the Philippines:

Movember. Parents and visitors may have noticed that most of the male staff members at Hanova have stopped shaving since the beginning of November. This is not because they all lost their razors! The goal of Movember is for staff members to be voted as having the best or worst facial hair. We started this fundraising activity last year to raise money for charity, and we hope to beat last year’s total of 850 RMB. During the last week of November (this week!), students will be given the chance to pay 1 RMB for each vote that they want to make to support teachers in their goal to have “Best Movember” or “Worst Movember.” Students can vote as many times as they want and the winning teacher will be announced at a special Movember Assembly on Friday, 29th November.

Learner Profile week.  The week of December 2-6, students and staff can wear special clothing all week if they make a 25 RMB donation. It is important that this is optional and that participation in Learner Profile Week should not interfere with learning. Students who do not wish to join in should wear the school uniform.

Learner Profile Week Programme:

  • Monday: Thinker Day - Students and staff may wear baseball caps or any other “thinking hat”.
  • Tuesday: Open minded Day - Students and staff may wear blue jeans, sweat shirts, or other casual clothing.
  • Wednesday: Balanced Day - Students and staff show that they balance schoolwork with physical activity by wearing clothing to support their favourite sport or team.
  • Thursday: Reflective Day - The goal of this day is to wear as many colours as possible – even may be reflective clothing!
  • Friday: Caring Day - Students come to school wearing their school uniform – and a smile!

Parent Volunteer Group. We will have a Parent Volunteer Meeting on Thursday, November 28th at 3:35pm in the Staff Room.  We will discuss the upcoming Christmas Production and Chinese New Year festivities. Please come for an update and to see how you can help with these events!

Qin Ling Mountains Science trip. On Wednesday 20th November the Science department, with the help of Mrs Fu and Ms Barkey, took the Year 7, 8, 9 and Phase 1 and 2 pupils to the Qin Ling mountains for an Environmental Science Field-trip.

The proposed route for the students was carefully planned in advance, by Mr Herben, to ensure it was both suitable and safe for all taking part. Throughout the trip the pupils were required to observe and record a wide variety of different species of plants, animals and insects. They also had to record examples of their group demonstrating many of the Learner Profile traits as they carried out their tasks. Each group had an iPad to allow them to do this and were told that there would be prizes for the best overall group.

Lunch was booked in a restaurant at the top of the mountain and by the time we got there we were all more than ready for it. The pupils then visited the lake nearby, and some shops, before starting the steep descent of the mountain.

The pupils and adults clearly enjoyed the day, and their learning, and because the prizes awarded to the winning group went to each homeroom class, this meant everyone got to benefit from them.

A special word of thanks to both our willing helpers for making the day go so smoothly.

Visit from Zhejiang University International College. On Thursday November 14th we had the pleasure of welcoming to our school, Mr. Cai Zusen, Deputy Director from Zhejiang University International College, Hangzhou. He carried out information sessions with our Year 12 and 13 students about the admissions process to the university for International students. Some of our students have shown genuine interest in applying for entry and are exploring their options further. In fact, one of our graduates from Year 13 in the last academic year, Mr. Garrett Seo is currently attending this university so we were grateful for this career talk and look forward to further developing connections with this university in the future.

Tuition fee for second term. Some families, who have not paid the whole year fee, have started to pay the second semester school fee. Please contact May Liu before you process any payment. We would like to make sure you have the correct school account.  Second semester’s fees are due on or before 18th December.

English Language Support (ELS) Q&A. If you have any questions that you would like to ask, please come along to the Library on Tuesday, 26th November at 3:00pm.  The ELS department will be there to answer any English learning related questions you might have.

Send any questions you might like answering to May Liu (may.liu@his-xian.com) in English or Chinese or to Nicole Li (nicole.li@his-xian.com) in Korean.

If we receive questions in advance we can prepare more complete answers.  However, if you just want to come along and ask your questions, or just hear what other parents want to know about, please just turn up.  Everyone welcome.

This meeting is a follow up to the one held on 12th November.

Translation will be available to Chinese and Korean.

Best regards,

Martin Hughes
