Hanova launches House and school leadership system

By Mr Martin Hughes

Dear Parents and

School Leadership. In the Secondary School the big news this week is the launching of our house and school leadership system.

Houses at Hanova International School:

Qin Han Tang Song

All students at Hanova have been placed in a house. The Secondary School students already know what house they are in and the Primary students will find out soon. (All siblings are in the same house.) Senior students were invited to apply for the positions of House Leaders. Those applications have been used to appoint House leaders as well as two Head Students.

In assembly this, Friday 21st November, each house will be allocated a house teacher who will work with the house leaders to ensure that their house wins the House of the Year Award. House competitions will begin in earnest in the second semester.  All that can be said at the moment, is that competition will be fierce and friendly and everyone will be involved! House Leaders and Head Students will be announced in the Secondary School assembly on Friday 21st November 2014. Any parents who would like to attend the assembly are welcome.

Modelling with junk! Mr Ajay Jain would like to put out a request to support projects in Art.   The following items are required. Please can you ensure they are washed and cleaned before they come to school, or it may get a little smellier and unpleasant in the Art room.

Items needed: Plastic bottles, cans, cardboard boxes, wooden items, plastic containers, food trays and food packaging material, egg trays, plastic, wooden and stainless steel spoons and forks, bubble wraps, milk/juice cartons, straws, chopsticks, toothpicks, barbecue skewers, paper cups, paper bowls, paper plates, aluminum and copper wire, toilet paper and food wrap tubes, electronic equipment packaging material (styrofoam, thermocol, paper mache), small toys and legos, construction toys, wine bottle corks, strings and yarn, cotton wool and any other thing which you may feel like to discard from your home.

MYP Report Cards and Parent Assessment Information Evening. We are coming to the end of the first reporting period for the Middle Years Programme at Hanova. Both students and teachers have been working very hard to improve attainment across all subjects and this will be reflected when we issue the report cards for MYP on December 16th next month.  In anticipation of this, David English, the MYP Coordinator, will be holding an informational session on MYP Assessment on Friday December 12th.  Further details about the venue, time and content will be shared in the coming weeks.

Air Quality. The air quality in Xi’an is a concern for many of us. Multiple times, during the school day, we check a website with regards to the air quality index. From this data we determine whether it is an inside or outside play day.  If the AQI is 300 or above, we keep all of the students inside.  Staff are notified of the AQI and instructed to put the air filtering system on when the AQI gets above 300.  For prolonged vigorous activity such as in PE lessons we do not allow the children outside if the AQI is above 200.  Parents may choose to indicate to their child's teacher if their children should stay inside if the AQI is between 200-300.  At the moment there are two families who have requested this.

The below website's reading is the closest station to Hanova so gives the most accurate data.  Therefore, please check the site below to get the most accurate information about our daily activities http://aqicn.org/?city=China/西安/高新西区

Best regards,

Martin Hughes
