Years 10-12 Students CAS visit to Xi’an Museum

By Mr Martin Hughes

Dear Parents and

PYP Read-a-thon. You should have received a letter from the homeroom teacher about the PYP Read-a-thon.  This Read-a-thon is a reading challenge for our PYP students to get them reading more books at home and to foster a further love of reading. It will run from April 24th through to May 22nd.  The students will read as many minutes in English as they can throughout the four weeks.  They can track their reading time on the coloured tracking sheet given to them by their teacher.  Each teacher will notify you of the student’s minute goal.  When they turn in the tracking sheet to school, they will receive a new one from their teacher.  For children who cannot read, please feel free to read to them.  We want the whole PYP to participate!  If you have any questions about the programme, feel free to contact the homeroom teacher.  Happy reading!

Y10-12 CAS visit. Y10-12 Advanced Chinese students visited the Residence of General Zhang Xueliang on 24th April.  There is very little English translation in this museum, making it difficult for foreign tourists to understand the significance and history of this site.  The museum’s curator has been very happy to offer our students the opportunity to translate the Chinese into English to make the museum more accessible.  This CAS translation project is scheduled to run for a couple of months, and is a great chance for our students to advance their Chinese and English skills.

The Cool Clay Club. The cool clay club is having a blast! We made our own clay and colored it ourselves.  Now, we are creating different things out of our clay. We learned how to make a base to an animal and build from there. Many of the children made dogs, cats, koalas and one even made an ice cream cone. Watching them get excited as they create their new masterpiece is quite thrilling.

Chinese Lesson for Adults. We have been contacted by Ms. Laura Wang, the owner of Xi'an Trader - a reputable language learning centre, about Chinese language and culture lessons. Laura has a couple of teachers who are willing to come to Hanova twice each month on 1st and 3rd  Tuesdays to provide lessons for adults.  The classes are divided into beginner and intermediate levels.  Beginner lessons are scheduled for 3:45-5pm and Intermediate lessons from 5:10-6:40pm.  This to try out Chinese lessons so that we can see what demand there may be in the forthcoming school year.  We can also look at offering such lessons at other times including the weekend or during the usual school day.  Please note that unfortunately we are unable to provide child care for any parents attending.  The intention is to start this programme as soon as possible, so if you are interested please email Zena (zena.yang@his-xian.com) as soon as possible.  Places in the classes are limited.

Labour Day holiday. Please remember that school will be closed from Wednesday, 29th April (tomorrow) till Friday, 1st May.  The last day of school is Tuesday, 28th April and the school will be open again on Monday, 4th May.  As it is Labour Day holiday there will be no Saturday Sports on 2nd May.

Secondary School Exams and Primary Assembly. These are running from 4th-8th May for Y10-12 and 12th-15th May for Y7-9.  There will be no Primary assemblies on 8th and 15th May as the auditorium will be used for exams.

Best regards,

Martin Hughes
