Hanova Sports Day 2017

By Francesco Masetti-Placci

Dear Parents and friends,

Welcome back, while one week already gone after the Spring Break holiday. Hereafter the news about last week.

Secondary Parent Teacher Conference. We are delighted to report we held our second hugely successful Parent Teacher Conference this week here in the Secondary school. There were some extremely valuable conversations and discussions continued. We were thrilled to have another opportunity to support our wonderful students together with their families, in our pursuit of academic excellence.

Guest speaker from Xi’an Jiaotong – Liverpool University. We will be having a professor from Xi’an Jiaotong – Liverpool University, Dr. Dawson, as guest speaker to talk about “Science as a Career” to our students. The event will take place at 2:35pm on Monday 17th April and it’s a great opportunity for our students who are interested in sciences as their post-secondary university studies. All parents are also recommended to come and for more information please contact our University Counselor Mrs. Zhu ( sharon.zhu@his-xian.com ).

Primary School News. The Year 1 students have been investigating clocks, and have also made their own sun clock. The Year 3 classes enjoyed a beautiful sunny day on Wednesday 12th, when they went strawberry picking at the Shang Wang Village. After collecting buckets of strawberries, they saw how food from the farms is then brought to the table when they had lunch at a local restaurant. Their current Unit of Inquiry is “Field to Table”.

Sports Day. Friday 14th April we hosted a wonderful Sports Day, with several events, competitions and a lt of enthusiasm from students, teachers, staff and parents, who came to support their children. Many thanks to all for their significant effort, which has made our event very pleasant and successful. A special thanks to our Athletic Director Mr. Lynn, ( anthony.lynn@his-xian.com ). During next week’s newsletter, we will report the detailed results.

ACAMIS. Dear all, we informed you recently that we have joined ACAMIS, the Association of Chinese and Mongolian International Schools. ACAMIS has eight divisions for 3 major seasons (volleyball, basketball, and soccer). Divisional participants and tournament dates are set at the Athletics Annual General Meeting (which was held last March 10th  at Nanjing International School) for the following academic year. There are also invitational events that are not split by division and are open to all ACAMIS schools that are comprehensive members. The first set of dates for 2017-18 is as follows:

Hanova is currently an “unaligned” ACAMIS member, which means we can take part in any events that we are invited to such as: swimming, athletics, golf, etc. . However, in order to develop further and become part of a “Division”, we need to be able to have teams (boys AND girls) in all the 3 “core” sports: basketball, football (“soccer”) and volleyball, possibly both in Primary and Secondary.

This is our challenge at the moment: we are still a small school and thus we simply do not have enough students to fulfill this divisional requirement. We are then looking to make an impact in a number of Invitational Events over the next year, primarily swimming and athletics.

Our winter swimming program has unearthed some talents and last year, during sports day and in inter-school competition, we have seen excellent athletics (track and field) results. We have just launched the Sports Academy and we will also look to utilize the sports that our students may compete in outside of school.

If any parents would like more information on our ACAMIS membership and on our sports programs, please contact Mr. Lynn, our Athletic Director ( anthony.lynn@his-xian.com ).

Hanova Academies. We have informed you previously about starting the Hanova Academies from Tuesday 18th April 2017: Hanova Sports Academy, Hanova Music Academy, Hanova Arts Academy. Email confirmation has been sent to all the families who have expressed interest. For any new interest, please register with our Marketing and Liaison Team.

Important Academic Dates. We are approaching the end of the school year. Please book your calendars to participate to these key academic events during the next months.

  • From Monday 1st to Friday 19th May, our Year 13 students will sit for the Diploma Programme examinations.
  • From Monday 22nd to Friday 26th May, our Secondary students will have some End of Year exams and assessments.

  • On Thursday and Friday 1st – 2nd June, our Year 6 students will present the PYP Exhibition, which is the culminating experience of the IB PYP.

Thanks again for your continuing support.

Yours,

Francesco Masetti-Placci
