IB PYP Authorisation Visit on 5th and 6th

By Francesco Masetti-Placci

Dear Parents and friends,

Hereafter the news and highlights of this past week, after the excitements for our first DP students’ graduation. Only one more week left before concluding our fifth academic year.

2017-2018 Academic Year. School activities for the 2017 – 2018 Academic Year will start for all students on 14th August 2017. New families and students are welcome on 11th August for a Family Induction Day on campus. The new school calendar is already available on our web site and if you have any special inquiry, please contact Ms. Yang in our Marketing team ( zena.yang@his-xian.com ).

IB PYP Authorisation Visit on 5th and 6th. On Monday and Tuesday this week our IB PYP Authorisation Visit was completed. We hosted Mrs. Rima Singh and Mrs. Patricia Whatarau, as representatives from the IBO who visited classes, spoke with teachers, parents and students, viewed necessary planning and documentation to ensure our Primary section and the overall school are meeting the requirements of the IB PYP Standards and Practices. Their recommendations will help us to reflect and improve our teaching practices and resources in order to be the best we can be for our school community and continue to grow. Thank you to all teachers and staff for the effort during the visit and thank you to all parents and students for their useful feedback. More on this in August!

Primary News. ransition Day will be held on Monday 12th June. Year 6 students will spend the day in MYP classes in order to become familiar with the MYP programme and structure of the day. Nursery to Year 5 classes will enjoy activities in their new class for next year. All students will participate as they will all benefit from the experience.

PYP students have also been busy with Mr. Dylan, creating wonderful artwork that is part of the PYP Art Exhibition, which is on display now until Carnival Day. Please take time to wander through the corridors to see this fantastic artwork.

A final reminder: the PYP Reports and student portfolios for the Second Semester will be given out on Monday 12th June.

Year 6 Exhibition. The students worked hard to prepare their Exhibition for the display that was in the school’s foyer last week.  The students had the experience of sharing their knowledge and skills learnt during this process with visitors from the Hanova Community and other visiting schools. Since then, the students have had the chance to reflect upon their efforts to see what worked well and what they could continue to develop as they prepare themselves to move on to the MYP programme.

Year 6 EOTC Residential Camp. This year the Year 6 students’ camp was in Foping. They stayed in a great hotel, tried some activities and had some different experiences. One of the highlights of these day for the students was the different activities, the BBQ including toasting marshmallows and seeing a very big bug.

Hereafter some statements from the students: “It was very good to walk around the wildlife and it feels very nice to see all the green things.”; “With the BBQ, we were risk takers as we tried new things.”; “It was very fun to turn a natural material into a piece of  art using the environment around us.”

Secondary EOTC Residential Week. The Secondary School has been a very quiet place since Tuesday, as the bulk of our students have gone off on to Luoyang and Shaolin on our residential EOTC, according to the itinerary provided previously. Parents in the WeChat group have received the usual “live-streaming” provided by our caring staff. It really looks like they are having loads of fun!

Secondary News. The Secondary in-school programme this week has been a balance of work and fun activities.

Secondary School reports will be issued next week. The grades represent an entire year’s work, however even newer students will receive a report. All parents and students will receive an email when reports can be accessed on Managebac.

Paris International MUN Conference. Last week, a small delegation of Hanova students have attended the 6th edition of the PIMUN (Paris International Model United Nations Conference) in France, from 31st May to 4th June. This continues to demonstrate the progress and level of our students, and predicts more results to come soon for our MUN and other activities.

PIMUN was hosted by Sciences-Po, a prestigious international French university, both selective and open onto the world, ranking among the finest institutions in the fields of humanities and social sciences in the world. Since it was founded in 1872, and even more today, Sciences Po is a place where new ideas can be put forward and implemented. This fits well with this year’s theme of the PIMUN conference, as stated in the invitation letter sent to our school team: “Let us, together, be the driving force behind international cooperation. Let us, together, ensure the sharing of knowledge and understanding with those who will shape this new order.”.

Our students participated to the Conference, debating different topics as part of the Disec and Ecosoc committees and met the 600 international participants from schools and universities around the world.

Congratulations to our MUN students and to our MUN Director, Mrs. Masetti, for the outstanding achievements and being excellent ambassadors of our school.

Student Leader. Throughout the school year you have seen our effort to develop student leadership throughout the school at all levels. We are now further developing policies and procedures and opportunities to extend it and ensure it becomes an integral part of our school life.

We have also appointed our new Head Boy – Jimmy Li Yihao, and Head Girl – Emily Chen, who will serve in their new leadership role and further support our school. Congratulations to our new student leaders!

They have taken over in May from the outgoing Head Boy – Kevin Qu, and Head Girl – Amee Trull, who have been fantastic ambassadors for our school and will continue supporting the Secondary student leadership over the next months. I would like to take this opportunity to thank them for their hard work and dedication.

Carnival Is Coming! We look forward to seeing everyone this Saturday at Carnival. A reminder that the event will run from 10:00-2:30. Games and Activities will be from 10:00-11:00, Lunch from 12:00-1:00, and Talent Show from 1:00-2:30. We hope that all members of the school community will come in to join the fun. Feel free to bring along guests, too! Carnival tickets are now on sale in the front office for those who would like to avoid the long lines on Saturday. Carnival tickets can be used for all games and activities and are 2 RMB for each ticket or 20 RMB for a book of 10.

University Visit. For our last university visit this year, we will host the admission representative from a prestigious university, New York University in Abu Dhabi, who will visit us at 2:30 on13th June.

New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD), is a research university with a fully integrated liberal arts and science college, located in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Together with New York University (NYU) in New York City and New York University Shanghai, the portal campus is part of NYU’s Global Network University. The academic program opened in September 2010 on the permanent campus built on Saadiyat Island, Abu Dhabi.

It is an excellent opportunity for our students interested in post-secondary science studies. Parents are welcome and recommended to attend.

2017 Yearbook. A reminder also, that the 2017 yearbook is ready and available next week. Please contact Ms. Yang for more details ( zena.yang@his-xian.com, cell.: 15389095953).

Last Day of School. You may have noticed from the School Calendar on our website that the last day of school for this academic year is set for Thursday, 15th June 2017 – only a half day, with buses leaving at lunch time. Details of the day will be sent to you by our Marketing team ( zena.yang@his-xian.com ).

Thanks again for your continuing support.

Yours,

Francesco Masetti-Placci
