The Principal's Newsletter

Primary Read-a-thon 2018

By Francesco Masetti-Placci

Dear Parents and friends,

Welcome back, after we enjoyed the Spring Festival holiday. Today we celebrate the Lantern Festival, which marks the end of Chinese New Year celebrations. This festival, on the 15th day of the first lunar month, is celebrated by lighting paper lanterns, a tradition that goes back through the millennia, and eating tangyuan, glutinous rice balls filled with various sweet pastes. And hereafter are the news of this first school week.

New Student Leaders. Hanova highly values the students’ voice and promotes student leadership throughout the school. We are proud to announce that the new student leaders were elected by the Secondary School students and announced on last Friday 9th February.

Head Boy: Leo Hu

Deputy Head Boy: Josselin Muntzer

Head Girl: Jenny Kim

Deputy Head Girl: Rose Jiang

Congratulations to all, we wish you a great year ahead. We look forward to a seamless handover from our previous students leaders, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank them for all their work and dedication as ambassadors for our school.

MYP Personal Project Joint Exhibition. The Year 11 students have been invited to share their learning experiences in a joint Personal Project Exhibition at the Qingdao Amerasia International School. This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to meet other MYP students and to participate in the IB world community.

In addition to the joint Personal Project Exhibition we will share our experiences of being IB MYP learners as well as Service Action in the MYP. This can be an opportunity to establish future collaboration in CAS activities during the Diploma. Furthermore, our Year 11 students will explore Qingdao’s historical areas (to support their current unit in historical investigation) and natural surroundings and look forward to sharing their experiences upon return. We are very grateful to all those at Hanova who have supported this initiative and made it possible.

Primary News. As spring begins and the weather changes, there has been a lot of activity in the PYP. Classes are finishing their Unit of Inquiry 4 (Except Nursery / Reception), completing Summative Assessments and reflections, and taking Action.

Many students are taking Action for the school community such as recycling, creating a compost bin for food scraps, and also applying their learning at home, changing their actions in daily life: conserving water, wasting less food and using less plastic or waste. Please support your child(ren) in all these responsible activities, as they become more aware of how they can contribute positively to our world.

Unit of Inquiry 5 is beginning this week or next, so look out for more information soon from the Unit of Inquiry newsletter being sent home.

Primary Read-a-thon. March is Readathon month in Primary, where we encourage students to READ, READ , READ at home as much as possible. As it is Dr Suess’s birthday on March 2nd, PYP classes will celebrate this iconic author with dress up days next week and lots of fun literacy activities in class and in the Library. Please support your child(ren) as they read and discover in school and at home.
A Readathon calendar was sent home this week and do not hesitate to contact your homeroom teacher if you need more information.

ECAs and Academies. This week we restarted our full program of extra-curricular activities (ECA) program for this year, that will continue until the end of May for this Semester, while Academies are progressing as planned. For additional information or inquiries, please contact our Marketing and Liaison Team.

Upper Primary Football Tournament. On Saturday 10th March, our Upper Primary football team will participate in a flash tournament organized by XHIS, competing against other international and bilingual schools in Xi’an. A detailed program of the tournament and its location, together with the consent form, will be sent home early next week to all the students involved. For additional information or inquiries, please contact our PYP Football Coach, Mr. Brown ( jorge.brown@his-xian.com ).

Thanks again for your continuing support.

Yours,

Francesco Masetti-Placci
