Hawks volleyball team performs well in official start

Dear Parents and friends

U19 Volleyball vs XIS - written by Mr Julian Barnsley, Head of Athletics.  On Tuesday, we traveled to XIS for a Hanova first; the official start of Hawks volleyball. The U19 squad performed above expectations and we able to meet and exceed all of the team targets. Success from the match were serves to challenge the receivers, a three touch attack, spikes, backcourt play to create an extended rally, a block and a double block.

Well done team. The next game will be a U14 fixture on Thursday October 12 played at home against XIS followed by an away fixture on Friday October 13 against DEXA.

GO HAWKS!

MYP Chinese Acquisition Students study plants - written by Ms Alina Zheng, Ms Rae Zhang, Jason Lee (Y11) & Kevin Joo (Y11).  This month, students from MYP Chinese Acquisition classes explored the plants on Hanova’s school campus. With their teachers’ guidance, they consulting materials and studied puns and homophonic culture in the Chinese naming culture.

Students Jason Lee and Kevin Joo wrote about their experience:

“We always see plants on our way to school, but we don't know the names of many of them.

Through this activity, we learned the names and characteristics of many plants.  If I see plants at school next time, I will look at them more carefully than before.

After this unit, we hope to learn more about plants at school, and maybe even work on a project to grow fruits or plants and eat the fruits we grew.”

“We also hope that the flowers and trees grow and thrive, just like our Hanova school – getting stronger and stronger.”

Update: Bottle Recycling House Competition!!! - written by Mr Gary Wood, MYP Humanities.  The bottle recycling house competition has been a huge success so far and I'm overwhelmed by the response of the students. One of our giant boxes has already been filled and we aren't even halfway through the competition! Remember, this competition does not end until FRIDAY 13th OCTOBER, so in the meantime please keep bringing your empty plastic bottles to school. It would be unfair for me to say who is winning, but as a tip may I recommend Tang house (Yellow) to hurry up and bring in some bottles!!! In the meantime, let's see what the next two weeks has in store. 加油!!!

About our School Principal

Dr Lucas J. Roberts

School Principal

Dr Lucas J. Roberts is the current School Principal at Hanova. He thoroughly enjoys being part of the Hanova Hawks community! Having served in international school education in China for over 15 years in Wuxi, Shanghai, Suzhou, and Beijing, being in Xi’an with his family to lead Hanova is indeed a joy and a privilege. “Mr. Luke,” as students call him, has served in numerous leadership capacities over the years, including Head of Primary, Head of Secondary, and School Principal/Head of School. Since 2014, he has served on nearly 20 WASC accreditation visiting committees around Asia to support other schools’ ongoing school improvement efforts, giving him substantial perspective on the international school world. Earning a B.A. in Interdisciplinary Studies helped spark Dr. Roberts’ belief that learning, rather than being isolated, should help students see patterns and connections across subjects with an emphasis on life skills and application. In other words, what we DO with knowledge is just as important as having knowledge, much in line with the IB Learner Profile and Hanova’s mission to develop responsible, wise, lifelong learners. Dr. Roberts earned an M.Ed. in Educational Administration and a Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in Educational Leadership, and he is a researcher, author, and conference speaker on a range of topics in education.
