Y3 Unit of Inquiry: Senses. Year 3 has begun with an exciting, hands-on unit about the senses—touch, taste, smell, sight, and sound. Students have explored the function of the senses and their importance in our daily lives. To encourage deeper thinking about these concepts, students participated in several interactive activities. They visited the secondary laboratory for a cow eyeball dissection, went on a sensory walk in the community park, scanned their own school for safety measures they can see, challenged their nose to decide if food was fresh or spoiled, build their adjective vocabulary to describe how things feel, and had doctors from the local hospital conduct eye, hearing, and smell tests. Also, our very own Chef Fredrick provided an engaging lesson on the different tastes we experience from various ingredients.
Next, Year 3 students will be challenged with activities that remove or weaken one of their senses, as well as collect and analyze data about the senses using pictographs and bar graphs.
Parent Information Session - MYP Assessment. Last Friday’s parent information session focused on MYP assessment, providing a dynamic platform for families to deepen their understanding of assessment in the MYP at Hanova. Parents/guardians engaged in an interactive activity that allowed them to practice and grasp the assessment philosophy and procedures integral to the MYP framework. Throughout the session, parents learned about specific criteria assessed in MYP, as well as the distinctions between formative and summative assessment. Additionally, Ms. Amy Hou, MYP Coordinator, presented updates from Hanova’s recent review of MYP Assessment Practices, highlighting key changes and enhancements made to ensure fair assessment that is attentive to student wellbeing and individual academic needs. This informative session fostered a collaborative atmosphere, empowering parents to better support their children’s academic journeys.
Parents/guardians and students can access Hanova’s complete Assessment Policy and Practices guides via ManageBac.
Hilarious Hair Day. Last Friday, September 13th, Hanovians across the whole school really got into Hilarious Hair Day, a spirited House competition event full of fun and creativity! Students and staff in both the Primary and Secondary school showcased their wildest, most imaginative hairstyles, from outrageous hair accessories to temporary hair spray, all while representing their respective houses–Qin, Han, Tang, or Song. Each House earned points for participation and creativity, making it a great opportunity for students to express their individuality while contributing to their House’s success. This event was a fantastic way to strengthen whole-school spirit, foster friendly competition, and bring the school community together in laughter and fun. We even spotted a couple of Hanova Hawks throughout the day!
U14 Girls Basketball Team Opening Winner. On September 12th our U14 girls basketball team had a warm-up match with KCIS. This was the first game of the new season and also a home game. Said coach Jason, “In the first five minutes, it was a little tense. Neither side scored.” Finally, the stalemate was broken with the first bucket made by Hanova. The game had some twists and turns, but in the end, the Hawks achieved a 28:7 victory! Our young hawks will train hard to prepare for the next away game against DEXA on Saturday, October 12th.
