Year 6 Marketplace

Dear Parents and friends

Year 6 Marketplace - written by Mr Cristian Felice.  This term, Year 6 students embarked on an exciting Unit 3 Project—a hands-on experience running competing shops. With a starting budget of 200 RMB, they learned to navigate the complexities of running a business, from understanding market needs to maximizing profits.

The journey began with surveys of teachers and students to identify needs and wants. Armed with this data, students carefully selected products, developed sales strategies, and created persuasive advertisements to attract customers. Teams assigned specialized roles, such as buyers, sellers, and accountants, to ensure smooth operations.

Mathematics played a key role, with students calculating costs, sales prices, and profits using fractions, decimals, and percentages. Each day brought new challenges: adjusting recipes, changing roles, and tweaking business practices to better match supply and demand.

This project not only taught practical skills like teamwork, budgeting, and advertising but also gave students a deeper understanding of how resources are used in economic systems. Year 6 proved themselves to be thoughtful entrepreneurs, making decisions that balanced creativity, efficiency, and customer satisfaction.

Well done, Year 6, for turning the school into a vibrant marketplace and learning valuable life lessons along the way!

Year 6 Students Get a Taste of Culinary Careers - written by Mr Attie VenterIn an exciting and educational experience, Year 6 students recently visited the school canteen kitchen to learn from Mr. Fred, our head chef, about the world of food preparation and the important roles behind the scenes. The students were given a tour of the kitchen, where Mr. Fred explained how the canteen caters to the diverse needs and wants of the school community.

Throughout the visit, Mr. Fred shared insights into how specialized jobs, such as chefs, kitchen assistants, and nutritionists, work together to ensure the school provides healthy, tasty meals. The students were fascinated to learn about how the canteen team manages supply and demand, from meal planning based on dietary preferences to ensuring there are enough ingredients to meet the needs of all students.

The visit gave students a unique, behind-the-scenes look at the canteen, helping them understand how the school community's needs and wants shape what happens in the kitchen every day. It was an eye-opening experience that highlighted teamwork, creativity, and the value of specialized professions in our everyday lives.
