Culinary and Reading Adventures at Hanova

Dear Parents and friends

Executive Chef Visit: A Taste of Spain. On the 26th of February, Hanova had the pleasure of hosting a Spanish food promotion with Sodexo’s regional chef Mr. Juan Casado from Spain. Chef Casado has 20+ years of culinary art experience and worked in his home country, Spain, before moving to China.

In addition to crafting a magnificent lunch, Chef Casado also led a cooking class with year 5 students where they discovered a taste of Spanish culture and made “Pan con tomate” tapas and “Mantecados” Christmas cookies.

During lunch time our students, teachers, and staff could taste Spanish specialties such as Tortilla (Spanish Potato omelet), Carcamusas (braised pork with sausage), and world famous black rice seafood Paella. He also prepared Churros right before our eyes which was a hit for everyone.

Yet another nice and memorable day in Hanova!

Did You Know?!  Dr. Seuss Week, held this week from March 3 to 7, celebrates the life and work of Dr. Seuss, a beloved children's author known for his imaginative stories and playful rhymes. He is considered one of the greatest children's authors because his books make reading fun and accessible, using rhythmic language and creative storytelling to engage young readers.

This event helps students develop essential literacy skills by enhancing their vocabulary, phonemic awareness, and reading fluency. By participating in themed activities, students gain confidence in reading and develop a lifelong love for books.

We have set up a special station on the first floor of the PYP building throughout this week, where students can enjoy Dr. Seuss books in an engaging way through videos of parents reading aloud. We’re very grateful to our parents who have read different Dr. Seuss books, bringing the stories below to life for our students:

- Green Eggs and Ham 绿鸡蛋和火腿

- I Can Read With My Eyes Shut! 我闭着眼睛也能看书!

- The Cat in the Hat 戴帽子的猫

- Fox in Socks穿袜子的狐狸

- Oh, The Thinks You Can Think!哦,你能思考的想法!

- Oh, The Places You'll Go!哦,你要去的地方!

Please check our WeChat Video Channel to watch the recordings.

About our School Principal

Dr Lucas J. Roberts

School Principal

Dr Lucas J. Roberts is the current School Principal at Hanova. He thoroughly enjoys being part of the Hanova Hawks community! Having served in international school education in China for over 15 years in Wuxi, Shanghai, Suzhou, and Beijing, being in Xi’an with his family to lead Hanova is indeed a joy and a privilege. “Mr. Luke,” as students call him, has served in numerous leadership capacities over the years, including Head of Primary, Head of Secondary, and School Principal/Head of School. Since 2014, he has served on nearly 20 WASC accreditation visiting committees around Asia to support other schools’ ongoing school improvement efforts, giving him substantial perspective on the international school world. Earning a B.A. in Interdisciplinary Studies helped spark Dr. Roberts’ belief that learning, rather than being isolated, should help students see patterns and connections across subjects with an emphasis on life skills and application. In other words, what we DO with knowledge is just as important as having knowledge, much in line with the IB Learner Profile and Hanova’s mission to develop responsible, wise, lifelong learners. Dr. Roberts earned an M.Ed. in Educational Administration and a Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in Educational Leadership, and he is a researcher, author, and conference speaker on a range of topics in education.
