WeForShe ECA/CAS Project – Bake Sale - written by Lalita Kusuma & Madison Washko, Y12 students. On March 12, 2025, co-leaders Lalita and Madison initiated a bake sale organised by the WeForShe ECA members: Miranda Fernandez (Y11), Victoria Park (Y11), Heila Maloney (Y10), Imogen Miller (Y9), and Eaindra Gerrits (Y9), an initiative aimed at empowering young women through community projects.
The event was a culinary experience and a meaningful way to contribute to a cause that provided women with scholarship opportunities around Asia. We prepared for the bake sale, spent our own money, and put in the time and effort on top of academic responsibilities to bake various delicious goods. Each participant brought their unique flair to the table, showcasing their commitment to women's empowerment.
Preparation required every student to lead in this activity, developing their sense of responsibility, creativity, leadership, time-management, and organisation skills. From tasks such as creating posters to announcing the event at Friday’s assembly.
Before break time, we set up our tables with colourful decorations, and the aroma of freshly baked goods attracted students and teachers. We shared stories about WeForShe and its mission, raising awareness about gender equality and empowerment. The school community responded positively, with most of our products sold out by the end of the break.
After paying back our members with their respective amounts of money spent to buy ingredients, we collected 900RMB, which will be donated to the Ching Tien Women’s Foundation!
After a reflection session, the members acknowledged the strengths and limitations of this monumental event. We aim to host more fun and beneficial events in the future and are open to any feedback!
This achievement would not have been possible without the support of our Secondary community: parents, students, teachers, and staff. A big thanks to everyone who came to demonstrate their support. Special thanks to our members’ parents and Ms. Alex, Ms. Sharon, and Mr. Aristipo for providing the necessary guidance in making this happen!

Lifelong Learning for All Educators. This past Saturday, Hanova was honored to serve as one of three host schools around China for the 2025 Teaching Assistants Conference in-person Peer-to-Peer session.
The event was an engaging and learning-filled follow-up to the 2-week virtual Teaching Assistants Conference held annually by two highly reputable international school organizations, PeerSphere and International Schools Services.
It’s no secret that Teaching Assistants (TAs) are critical to the education of our students, and investing in their professional growth brings about significant dividends to our school community. Hosting such an event directly aligns with our vision to be “a long-standing quality educational institution” and our mission “to make a community of inspiring, wise, principled and active life-long learners.”
Facilitated by a long-time educator, June Wang, educators from schools in Xi’an, Dalian, and Nanning converged onto our campus and left with new insights, connections, and ready-to-use practices. Hanova’s TAs modeled our inquiry-based approach to learning excellently, while actively listening to and learning from their new-found colleagues during the event.
Here’s to lifelong learning!
How can war be prevented? - written by DP History Students & Mr John McGovern. Y12 and Y13 DP History students recently got together for a roleplay set during the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962. Each student played a role from the EXCOMM group which was convened by President Kennedy to work out the US response to the discovery of Soviet missile sites in Cuba. Amongst the people advising the President were 'hawks' who argued for a swift and strong response and 'doves' who argued for diplomacy and deescalation.
The roleplay gave the chance for students to put forward their arguments and it became more and more animated even with the "No Fighting in the War Room" and George Washington posters watching on. The hawks argued for everything from assassinations to nuclear war to the annexation of Canada, but President Kennedy kept a calm head, at one point asking the CIA director "why do you talk so much?" Eventually the members voted for a naval blockade of Cuba and negotiations to end the war, just like in real life.
Student reflections highlight the meaningful learning this roleplay experience created. As the Secretary of Defense, Robert S. McNamara, Y12 student Lalita said "Being a dove, I had to think critically in forming strong arguments against certain hawks." Fellow Y12 student Devin, as Chief of Naval Operations, concluded that "We were able to understand the tensions between the superpowers in the context of the Cold War from the point of view of a particular character, gaining a new sense of that particular era."
