Connecting Confucius to the IB Learner Profile

Dear Parents and friends

Connecting Confucius to the IB Learner Profile - written by Ms Nancy Hao & Ms Rae Zhang.  Year 8 and 9 Chinese Acquisition classes recently took on an engaging learning experience in which students learned about Confucius—one of history’s most well-known educators and philosophers—and connected his sayings to the IB Learner Profile.

This activity centered on the Analects (论语)—a book of sayings and ideas from Confucius. Our Chinese teachers showed students several important quotes. The challenge was to study these old maxims and figure out which parts of the IB Learner Profile they best match.

Some groups connected the saying “学而时习之,不亦说乎?” (Is it not a joy to learn and practice what you have learned?) to being Knowledgeable and Reflective. Others discussed how “己所不欲,勿施于人” (Do not impose on others what you yourself do not desire) perfectly embodies the principle of being Caring.

This engaging activity was more than just a language exercise. By linking the profound thoughts of Confucius to the IB Learner Profile, our students gained a deeper appreciation for both Chinese philosophy and the international values that guide their education at our school.

The Third Hanova Hard-Pen Calligraphy Competition written by Ms Janice Cao. We are delighted to announce that the Third Hanova Hard-Pen Calligraphy Competition — a biennial celebration showcasing the elegance and cultural depth of Chinese handwriting — will take place this coming November.

Held every other year, this special event invites students to appreciate the strength and beauty of Chinese characters, enjoy the joy of writing, cultivate good habits, and inspire a passion for learning.

Over the past two competitions, Hanova students have showcased remarkable talent and creativity.

This year’s competition continues that proud tradition, offering another opportunity for students to express themselves through the power of the written word. Details about participation and submission can be found on the event poster.

The award ceremony will take place on November 28, 2025, where we will once again celebrate the artistry and dedication of Hanova’s young calligraphers.

Let’s enjoy another inspiring showcase of creativity and cultural expression through the timeless beauty of Chinese calligraphy!

About our School Principal

Dr Lucas J. Roberts

School Principal

Dr Lucas J. Roberts is the current School Principal at Hanova. He thoroughly enjoys being part of the Hanova Hawks community! Having served in international school education in China for over 15 years in Wuxi, Shanghai, Suzhou, and Beijing, being in Xi’an with his family to lead Hanova is indeed a joy and a privilege. “Mr. Luke,” as students call him, has served in numerous leadership capacities over the years, including Head of Primary, Head of Secondary, and School Principal/Head of School. Since 2014, he has served on nearly 20 WASC accreditation visiting committees around Asia to support other schools’ ongoing school improvement efforts, giving him substantial perspective on the international school world. Earning a B.A. in Interdisciplinary Studies helped spark Dr. Roberts’ belief that learning, rather than being isolated, should help students see patterns and connections across subjects with an emphasis on life skills and application. In other words, what we DO with knowledge is just as important as having knowledge, much in line with the IB Learner Profile and Hanova’s mission to develop responsible, wise, lifelong learners. Dr. Roberts earned an M.Ed. in Educational Administration and a Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in Educational Leadership, and he is a researcher, author, and conference speaker on a range of topics in education.
