Primary ECAs Season 1 Recap!

Dear Parents and friends

Primary ECAs Season 1 Recap!  Hanova’s first season of Extra-Curricular Activities (ECAs) in the Primary showcased a vibrant range of learning experiences designed to extend learning and support whole-child development. Across all year levels, students explored new interests, built skills, and engaged in joyful, hands-on learning that encouraged confidence, creativity, and collaboration.

Nursery and Reception students participated in Ball Skills, developing coordination through playful activities involving rolling, catching, kicking, balancing, and beanbag exercises. These sessions strengthened motor skills while fostering teamwork and movement exploration.

In Years 1–2, students chose from three ECAs. Football introduced foundational skills such as dribbling, passing, and shooting, with growing teamwork and sportsmanship evident throughout the season. Junior Scientist offered engaging, experiment-based inquiry into forces, materials, and simple chemistry, helping students build scientific thinking habits. Cooking gave young chefs confidence in the kitchen and culminated in a joyful family potluck where children shared their homemade dishes and personal recipe books.

Years 3–4 also enjoyed diverse options. Mini-Volley provided an energetic introduction to volleyball techniques, teamwork, and game awareness, highlighted by a final round-robin tournament. Dragon Health, led by a parent volunteer, offered a playful exploration of Traditional Chinese Medicine through herbs, movement, and art. Dance & Drama helped students develop expressive communication skills and concluded with spirited Reader’s Theater performances for parents. Gardening engaged students in designing succulent gardens, learning planting techniques, and producing a reflective video to document their progress.

Finally, Years 5–6 students participated in numerous ECA experiences. Rollerblading emphasized safety, balance, agility, and technique refinement. Nature Explorers immersed students in campus biodiversity through plant identification, specimen creation, and the installation of educational tree nameplates. Band brought together young musicians to perform festive pieces while strengthening music fundamentals. Photography introduced compositional principles and camera techniques, culminating in visual storytelling that captured the spirit and highlights of Season 1 ECAs.

Together, these activities empowered students to celebrate curiosity, growth, and community across Hanova’s Primary School. We can’t wait to see the exciting learning continue in Season 2!

Poetry: Unveiling Society, Expressing Farewell: Korean Language and Literature Poetry & Art Exhibition written by Namhee Kong & Soohyun Park. Students in MYP Korean Language and Literature held a Poetry & Art Exhibition, moving beyond knowledge acquisition to apply their learning and share their insights with the community.

Year 9: Writing Poetry that Reveals Hidden Aspects. Year 9 students created poems and Sihwa (poetry-art) pieces on societal issues. The goal was to illuminate these hidden issues and encourage community awareness. Students applied poetic theory to creatively express reality, practicing social responsibility through their work. They also hosted a 'Meet the Poet' session to personally explain their poems to school members.

Year 10: The Language of Farewell through Symbolism and Metaphor. Year 10 studied symbolism and metaphor, then created original poems and Sihwa on the theme of "farewell." They explored partings from people, dreams, and even themselves. This activity focused on recognizing and expressing emotions creatively and healthily through language.

By artistically reinterpreting the universal experience of loss, students reflected on their inner worlds and experienced literature's power to foster empathy. During the exhibition, they explained how the symbolism in their works conveyed emotions and offered interactive activities like “Creating a Three-Line Poem about Farewell.”

This exhibition is an excellent example of our students growing into true learners who apply their knowledge and share the results with the community, using the creative language of poetry and art to share deep reflection and insight into both the world and themselves.

About our School Principal

Dr Lucas J. Roberts

School Principal

Dr Lucas J. Roberts is the current School Principal at Hanova. He thoroughly enjoys being part of the Hanova Hawks community! Having served in international school education in China for over 15 years in Wuxi, Shanghai, Suzhou, and Beijing, being in Xi’an with his family to lead Hanova is indeed a joy and a privilege. “Mr. Luke,” as students call him, has served in numerous leadership capacities over the years, including Head of Primary, Head of Secondary, and School Principal/Head of School. Since 2014, he has served on nearly 20 WASC accreditation visiting committees around Asia to support other schools’ ongoing school improvement efforts, giving him substantial perspective on the international school world. Earning a B.A. in Interdisciplinary Studies helped spark Dr. Roberts’ belief that learning, rather than being isolated, should help students see patterns and connections across subjects with an emphasis on life skills and application. In other words, what we DO with knowledge is just as important as having knowledge, much in line with the IB Learner Profile and Hanova’s mission to develop responsible, wise, lifelong learners. Dr. Roberts earned an M.Ed. in Educational Administration and a Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in Educational Leadership, and he is a researcher, author, and conference speaker on a range of topics in education.
