Inquiring into Tools - written by Mr Graeme Noble. We began our Year 2 Unit of Inquiry on tools with a “zoom‑out” strategy to spark curiosity and critical thinking. Students explored highly zoomed-in photographs of familiar tools, moving around the classroom to make predictions about what the objects might be and how the images were connected. This encouraged careful observation, creative thinking, and sharing of ideas with peers.
Next, slightly less zoomed-in images were revealed, allowing students to refine their hypotheses, make clearer connections, and begin building a shared vocabulary for the unit. This process promoted iterative thinking and showed how observation and questioning support understanding.
As a pre-assessment and tuning-in activity, students responded individually to the prompt: “What is a tool?” They wrote their own definitions and then discussed their ideas with classmates, exploring a variety of perspectives. This dialogue helped students articulate their understanding while developing critical thinking and communication skills.
Multiple provocations connected to tools were arranged both inside and outside the classrooms, giving students rich opportunities to pursue the inquiry at their own pace through open-ended, student-driven investigations. Through these activities, students noticed patterns, compared ideas, and deepened their understanding of tools and their purposes. Visual inquiry, discussion, reflection, and hands-on exploration provided a meaningful starting point while allowing teachers to gauge prior knowledge and inform future planning.
