A Closer Look at the DP Core: Parent Information Session Highlights - written by Ms Sharon Zhu. Last Wednesday morning, we were delighted to welcome parents to our DP Information Session to look in depth at the DP Core components.
During the session, the Coordinators gave a clear overview of the three elements of the DP Core: Theory of Knowledge (TOK), the Extended Essay (EE), and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS). Parents were introduced to the purpose of each component and the way they work together to develop students as thoughtful, reflective, and well-rounded learners.
The session explored how TOK encourages students to question, analyze, and reflect on how knowledge is formed across different disciplines. The new Extended Essay guidelines were introduced, which underscore the component’s value as an opportunity for students to carry out independent research on a topic they are genuinely interested in, while developing important academic skills such as research, writing, and time management. CAS was also discussed as a key part of the DP experience, encouraging students to engage in creative projects, physical activity, and service beyond the classroom. Through CAS, students not only grow as balanced and compassionate individuals, but also build powerful portfolios that can strengthen their university applications.
We trust the session offered a clearer picture of how the DP Core is not an addition to the programme, but a vital foundation that enriches students’ learning and prepares them for success both at Hanova and beyond.
