PYP EOTCs!

Dear Parents and friends

PYP EOTCs! Last week, Hanova’s Upper Year classes headed out on their annual Education Outside the Classroom (EOTC) overnight trips, a highlight of the academic year set early on in order to form strong friendships and memories that last through the entire school year.

Our Year 3 students enjoyed an exciting overnight experience filled with adventure, teamwork, and plenty of fun! Students spent the first day taking part in activities at Taroko Sports Park before returning to Hanova for a Master Chef challenge, setting up camp on the school’s football pitch, and enjoying s’mores together. The next morning brought adventure games, free time, and a refreshing swim before packing up.

Year 4 students enjoyed a memorable overnight adventure at Jingyu Gorge Bamboo Forest! The trip was packed with hands-on experiences, including team-building activities, bamboo dancing, sticky rice making, kayaking, archery, and a visit through the bamboo forest. Students also enjoyed making creative bamboo crafts and, upon returning to Hanova, a swim back at school.

Year 5 students enjoyed an exciting three-day EOTC adventure in Foping! Their trip included visits to the Foping Museum and golden monkey breeding base, as well as hiking, fruit and vegetable picking, team-building activities, and plenty of time exploring the outdoors. Students also enjoyed creative experiences such as stone painting, dyeing, and pillow painting, along with a barbecue and other shared meals.

And finally, Year 6 students enjoyed a three-day trip to Youran Mountain! Students explored the mountain area through hiking and nature walks, took part in outdoor activities, and enjoyed swimming and relaxing together. Evenings brought more shared fun with a bonfire, s’mores, and karaoke. As part of their current cultures and traditions unit in Year 6, students also did a Haka (Maori) competition and practiced Adamu (Maasai jumping). The trip was a great opportunity for students to build independence, strengthen friendships, and enjoy meaningful learning and adventure beyond the classroom in what is their final year in the Primary school at Hanova!

Overall, these memorable EOTC experiences help students build independence, strengthen friendships, take risks by trying new things, and problem-solve through challenges and team-building experiences. Hanova’s PYP teachers and staff are to be commended for their care, attention to details, energy, and enthusiasm leading students in and beyond Xi’an on this year’s EOTC excursions!

Huge Congratulations to Our WSC Scholars - written by Ms Mindy Li.  We are thrilled to share that six of Hanova's scholars competed in the World Scholar's Cup Global Round this summer—and both teams have qualified for the Tournament of Champions at Yale University!

Our Year 10 scholars—Maxime, Easton, and Gabriel—competed in Shanghai, where they placed in the Top 20 against thousands of participants. Here's what they shared:

"From the first to the last day, it was pure excitement mixed with anxiety. My teammates reassured me and comforted my doubts. This competition wasn't only about cups or medals—it was a memorable adventure that will always be engraved in my memories." – Maxime

"Against all expectations, we did really well. I learned not to over- or underestimate things, or panic about outcomes beyond our control." – Gabriel

Meanwhile, our Year 9 scholars—Michelle, Wendy, and Jacob—competed in Bangkok and achieved an outstanding Overall Team Top 5 award! Here's what they had to say:

"We spent countless nights studying until midnight, but it was worthwhile. The most important thing about WSC is not the award, but the process of learning new knowledge and the courage to express yourself." – Michelle

"My teammates motivated me and helped me stay on track. We made great memories together, and I truly appreciate their support throughout this journey!" – Wendy

"We didn't do this for the physical rewards—it was for the valuable experience and the opportunity to see the larger world." – Jacob

What is WSC?

The World Scholar's Cup is a global academic competition where students debate, write, and test knowledge across six subjects. It's a celebration of learning!

If your child is interested in joining WSC for next season, please contact Ms. Mindy at mindy.li@his-xian.com.

About our School Principal

Dr Lucas J. Roberts

School Principal

Dr Lucas J. Roberts is the current School Principal at Hanova. He thoroughly enjoys being part of the Hanova Hawks community! Having served in international school education in China for over 15 years in Wuxi, Shanghai, Suzhou, and Beijing, being in Xi’an with his family to lead Hanova is indeed a joy and a privilege. “Mr. Luke,” as students call him, has served in numerous leadership capacities over the years, including Head of Primary, Head of Secondary, and School Principal/Head of School. Since 2014, he has served on nearly 20 WASC accreditation visiting committees around Asia to support other schools’ ongoing school improvement efforts, giving him substantial perspective on the international school world. Earning a B.A. in Interdisciplinary Studies helped spark Dr. Roberts’ belief that learning, rather than being isolated, should help students see patterns and connections across subjects with an emphasis on life skills and application. In other words, what we DO with knowledge is just as important as having knowledge, much in line with the IB Learner Profile and Hanova’s mission to develop responsible, wise, lifelong learners. Dr. Roberts earned an M.Ed. in Educational Administration and a Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in Educational Leadership, and he is a researcher, author, and conference speaker on a range of topics in education.
