Discovering Magnetism: Year 3 scientists at work!

Dear Parents and friends

Discovering Magnetism: Year 3 PYP Scientists at Work! - written by Ms Dominique Wilinska-Essa, Year 3 Teacher.  Our Year 3 students have been busy applying the scientific method to uncover the secrets of magnetic forces. Their inquisitive minds led them to ask some magnetic questions: Which magnet is the strongest? Does size affect magnetic power? Are magnets as forceful underwater as they are in air?

With hypotheses in hand, our young scientists set up experiments, measuring and observing with the excitement of true researchers. They learned that the biggest magnet isn't always the strongest and that water does indeed have a mysterious effect on how magnets work.

Their findings were not just about magnetism but also about the joy of discovery. Through graphs and lively discussions, they shared their results, learning that science is not just about getting the right answers, but also about asking more questions.

We're proud of our budding scientists for showing us that learning can be a magnetic force all on its own!

Y13 Mock Examinations - written by Ms Sharon Zhu, DP Coordinator.  The Year 13 students have commenced their mock examinations on Monday, 19th February. These examinations will continue until Monday, 4th March, providing our students with an invaluable opportunity to practice and prepare for their upcoming International Baccalaureate (IB) examinations in May.

The mock examinations serve as a crucial milestone in our students' academic journey, allowing them to experience the format, structure, and rigor of the IB examinations. This practice run enables them to identify their strengths and weaknesses, refine their study strategies, and make necessary adjustments to achieve their best performance in the final exams. The feedback and results the students receive from these mock examinations play a pivotal role in their final exam preparations. It helps them gauge their current level of understanding, identify areas that require further attention, and work closely with their teachers to address any gaps in their knowledge. This feedback loop ensures that our students are well-prepared and confident when they enter the examination hall in May.

We encourage parents to actively engage with their child's progress during this time. Supportive conversations and assistance in creating a conducive study environment can greatly contribute to their success. Additionally, we urge students to use this opportunity to develop effective time management skills, practice exam techniques, and seek guidance from their subject teachers and the IB Diploma Coordinator.

We are confident that these mock examinations will prove to be a valuable experience for our Year 13 students. It is an opportunity for them to showcase their academic growth, reinforce their understanding of the IB curriculum, and build their confidence ahead of the final exams.

We wish all our Year 13 students the very best for their mock examinations. May this practice run serve as a stepping stone towards their success in the upcoming IB examinations.

Year 8 – Humanities - Service Action Project - written by Mr. Gary Wood and Ms. Sandra Gerrits, MYP Humanities.  In year 8 humanities class, our students were exploring our impact on the environment as part of their unit on globalisation. As part of this unit, the students carried out a service action activity which allowed them the opportunity to create their own web-pages. Using these web-pages, the students chose one area of our lives that is linked to globalization and highlighted how it is having an impact on the environment. Students worked well in their teams to delegate the task which had been set, as well as show fantastic research skills. The creation of the web-pages proved challenging at first, but with perseverance they were able to push forward and create some concise yet informative web-sites.
