DP TOK Exhibition 2024

Dear Parents and friends

DP TOK Exhibition - written by Mr John McGovern, MYP & DP Humanities.  Last Friday the DP1 students completed their Theory of Knowledge (TOK) Internal Assessment, culminating in an Exhibition held in the library. Students had to choose three objects and show how they relate to one of the 35 prompts (questions) in the Guide.

The aim of the exhibition is to showcase the students' critical thinking and analytical skills through reflecting on the nature of knowledge. Students chose questions such as “Why do we seek knowledge?”, “Can new knowledge change established values and beliefs?” and “Are some things unknowable?”

This piece of work counts for 33% of their overall grade in TOK. The students worked hard over the last month to create their exhibition and write their reports and received good feedback from students and teachers at the Exhibition.

Hanova’s Annual Book Fair - written by Ms Sophia Suo, Librarian.  We are delighted to share the wonderful experiences and successes from our recent Annual Book Fair from May 8th to 10th! This year’s event was a resounding success, filled with joy, discovery, and a renewed passion for reading among our students. Beijing Foreign Languages Bookstore is our new book seller. Their extensive collection of young adult and children's books captivated the students’ imaginations. From gripping adventures to magical tales, book seller’s selection truly had something for everyone. And we are incredibly grateful for the enthusiastic participation and support from our parents and teachers. Your involvement helped make the Book Fair a truly enriching experience for our students. By fostering a fun and engaging environment, we have collectively sparked a deeper interest in reading among our children.

Success in Academic Competition - written by Ms. Shirley Qi, Secondary Science Teacher & Ms. Mindy Li, IB Administrator.  We are thrilled to announce the outstanding achievements of our students in the recent academic competitions. Jiaqi Zhang (Jacqueline) from Year 9 and Mingxuan Hu (Lucas) from Year 7A have excelled in academic competitions, showcasing remarkable skills and dedication. Their exceptional performance has made us incredibly proud.

Jacqueline has achieved National Silver in the National Science League, and Lucas has won Global Gold and National Top Gold in Intermediate Mathematical Challenge and Math Kangroo. Their success serves as an inspiration to all students, encouraging them to strive for greatness in their academic pursuits. We hope that Jacqueline and Lucas’s achievements will motivate more students to engage in such enriching experiences and unleash their full potential.

Some students are participating in the Big Science Competition this Saturday, we wish them all the best!

If you have any interest in attending any competitions or if you have further questions or suggestions, please feel free to contact Ms. Mindy Li or Ms. Shirley Qi at mindy.li@his-xian.com and shirley.qi@his-xian.com.

About our School Principal

Dr Lucas J. Roberts

School Principal

Dr Lucas J. Roberts is the current School Principal at Hanova. He thoroughly enjoys being part of the Hanova Hawks community! Having served in international school education in China for over 15 years in Wuxi, Shanghai, Suzhou, and Beijing, being in Xi’an with his family to lead Hanova is indeed a joy and a privilege. “Mr. Luke,” as students call him, has served in numerous leadership capacities over the years, including Head of Primary, Head of Secondary, and School Principal/Head of School. Since 2014, he has served on nearly 20 WASC accreditation visiting committees around Asia to support other schools’ ongoing school improvement efforts, giving him substantial perspective on the international school world. Earning a B.A. in Interdisciplinary Studies helped spark Dr. Roberts’ belief that learning, rather than being isolated, should help students see patterns and connections across subjects with an emphasis on life skills and application. In other words, what we DO with knowledge is just as important as having knowledge, much in line with the IB Learner Profile and Hanova’s mission to develop responsible, wise, lifelong learners. Dr. Roberts earned an M.Ed. in Educational Administration and a Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in Educational Leadership, and he is a researcher, author, and conference speaker on a range of topics in education.
