Hanova’s hosts Duathlon Event

By Mr Martin Hughes

Dear Parents and

Duathlon. Our first formal sporting event took place last Friday.  All of The students did remarkably well by taking part in a running event and a cycling event.  Some of the students had even learned to ride a bike for the first time.  The determination and effort from so many of the students were really impressive, with even the youngest students able to take part.  I have never seen students so young be able to run as far as they did and even able to run back, and then do the same on bikes – well done to all of them and the teachers who trained them.  Also thank you very much for your support by either coming in to support your child and/or sending in bikes – we were overwhelmed by the number.  Now that we have finished training for the event, we would like you to collect your bikes at your earliest convenience.  Also thanks to the organising committee of Natalie O’Connor, Elaine Gillick and Denis McKeown.

Christmas Carol rehearsals. Week 1 of the rehearsal schedule for our mid winter production of a Christmas Carol has taken place this week with the students starting to learn some of the songs, and the narrators and lead parts starting to work on their lines.  A number of the students will be bringing scripts home to learn so we hope you can support them in learning their lines – little and often is often the best way. The dates for performances are Wednesday, 12th December at 2pm and Thursday, 13th December at 7pm.

Staffing. It is with regret that I write to inform you that Mrs Rosemary McKeown has decided to leave her position as Teaching Assistant, at least for the time being, for personal reasons.  I would like to thank Mrs McKeown for the hard work, commitment and conscientiousness that she has shown to the students at Hanova. She will be missed, though we hope to see her at future Hanova events, and maybe even returning in the future.

Parent School Association (PSA). Our next PSA meeting will be held on Tuesday, 20th November.  There will be an opportunity to learn something about the International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum in short meetings for the primary years and the middle years from 3pm.  These meetings will help to explain the curriculum your child is experiencing.  The meetings will be held in the Library.  This will be followed at 3:30pm by a PSA meeting where previous events will be reviewed and plans for the performance of a Christmas Carol will be discussed along with other events.  Parents and friends will also have an opportunity to make comments, suggestions or raise concerns about any general aspects of the school.

Please put the event in your diary and come along whether it is just to listen, make suggestions or offer your assistance.

Furniture. We are in the process of finalising our order for the next batch of furniture.  This is to allow for some growth in the school and to plan for the additional Y1 classroom and Chinese classroom for the new staff we are currently seeking to appoint.

Extra Curricular Activities (ECAs). Many of our ECAs require a lot of energy and they come at the end of an active day.  This is also a long day for our younger students, so many of them are hungry despite having had their lunch and an afternoon snack.  Please send your child with a healthy snack to give them that energy boost and fuel that they need at the end of the day, and enough to last them till they have their dinner.  Even some of our teachers feel hungry by that time of the day.

Best regards,

Martin Hughes
