Hanova International Day 2017

By Francesco Masetti-Placci

Dear Parents and friends,

Hereafter a few highlights of this week and other recent initiatives.

Soon we will report about celebrations before the holidays.

International Day. Hanova’s 6th annual International Day celebration took place on Friday this week. A great time was had by all and our students took home a taste of culture from several different countries around the world. The 24 different nationalities that today make up our Hanova family were on display in the Parade of Nations and it was great to see so many students dressed in their national clothing. International mindedness is an important part of the IB philosophy, it is part of our everyday activities and it was well represented at this event.

A big “thank you!” to parents who contributed a wide variety of international delicacies for our buffet lunch and to Hanova staff members for taking the time and making the effort to plan and organize fun, educational activities for our students. Look for the International Day photo gallery on our website and our upcoming WeChat notification.

Secondary News. On Friday 27th October the also the Secondary students participated in Halloween festivities, by dressing up with great gusto! All participating students contributed RMB 5 to their house. House points were awarded on the basis of students’ contributions, and Song came first, Han second, Qin third and Tang in fourth position. This was a turnabout from the last competition, the Interhouse Quiz, in which Tang came first and Song last!

House activities rest on three legs: 1) Service related activities, 2) Academic related activities and achievements and 3) Sporting activities and achievements. And during the course of the year an equal number of points will be awarded to each of these groups of activities (legs). At this point “consistent effort” looks like the key to success, with Han in first position!

On International Day afternoon Secondary students will play a new game for most of them, called Aussie Rules Football. House points will be awarded according to how the team plays the game, not according to which team wins! We hope this will be lots of fun and help us to develop a different

Secondary Basketball Match. Last Friday 27th at 4pm our Secondary Basketball team began its season, with a match against XHIS. This is a new young team, after Hanova lost almost the whole previous team due to graduation and relocation. Our young Heroes boys gave a good account of themselves showing some great potential and resilience against a much bigger opposition. Well done to Isaac Rice for leading the team as the new captain and thank you to Mr. Chao and Mr. Morgan for the excellent coaching. We also thank all those who came to cheer our Heroes team.

Primary Art Exhibition. A reminder of the PYP Art Exhibitions, on display in the school reception until Friday 10th November.

Staff Professional Development. A reminder that there will be no school for students on Friday 17th November. Hanova Teachers and Staff will hold trainings and professional development meetings during Friday 17th and 18th November.

Thanks again for your continuing support.

Yours,

Francesco Masetti-Placci
