Happy Chinese New Year 2018!

By Francesco Masetti-Placci

Dear Parents and friends,

Today we will break again to celebrate the Chinese New Year and the Spring Festival, the most important holiday in China. Today we all participated in the school activities before going on holiday.

Happy Year of the Dog!

Chinese New Year Celebrations. In the lead up to Chinese New Year our Primary classes last week were busy making decorations, cooking and learning Chinese songs and stories. This Friday our music teachers, Mr. Giovanni and Ms. Krystal, have led students in a celebration singing march around the school and then to the Chinese New Year celebration assembly. All Chinese classes today had special activities to continue the celebrations during the day. The corridors were filled with the sound of drums and most of our students today were dressed in red or gold colors or in a traditional Chinese dress.

Secondary students have celebrated the event, with a Calligraphy Contest and a house competition to set up a table full of imperial nibbles. Corridors and rooms were filled with the food displays and most of our students today were dressed in traditional dresses and colors.

Secondary News. We were pleased to host Mrs. Paulina Aguilera, the IB MYP’s representative coming from Beijing this week. She came to support our implementation of the MYP and to see how far we have progressed since our MYP Authorisation visit in August 2016.

Throughout her visit, she was wonderfully encouraging and gave us many great ideas and suggestions, while confirming that Hanova is addressing all the recommendations received so far. We now have three more years to continue delivering the MYP, before our evaluation visit in the 2020-21 academic year. Many thanks to Mrs. Trull, our MYP Coordinator, and to all those who did so much to make this visit such a success.

Our Second International Award. Congratulations to our Year 13 student Kevin Qu, who completed his Silver level of The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award!

On 7th February, the Award Office confirmed that our second Year 13 student, Kevin Qu, has completed his Silver level of the Award. Congratulations!

Hanova has been officially licensed as a Basic Independent Award Centre since 2015, and we’ve had our first group of award participants in 2016. Those students completed their Service, Skills, Physical Recreation, and Adventurous Journey sections to receive their Award accordingly.

Hanova provides a rigorous Award organization and support system with advices and support from well-trained teachers. There are professional assessors and supervisors to assess the participation time requirements and degree in order to help students to gain the Award.

The International Award is the world’s leading achievement award to develop youth leadership. It is voluntary, non-competitive and available to anyone aged 14-24. For more information, please contact our Award Leader, Ms. Hou ( amy.hou@his-xian.com ).

Primary News. On Tuesday, our Year 6 students visited the Shaanxi EDL Equipment Company, where they were able to observe connectors and couplings being machined for production. The manager, Mr. Kayacik, and his assistant, Mrs. Wang, led our team through the company and explained each step of the production. The students saw the raw materials used in the machines and watched products being made, plus they were able to observe the quality control through two different types of product tests.

Our hosts also offered the lunch and a keepsake made at the company. All children all came home with a steel ring etched with the company logo and their initials. It was a fabulous learning experience, which supported the students’ understanding of how energy is used in daily life since they were able to see simple machines in action.

Also a reminder that on 26th February our new Nursery class will begin. Please contact our Head of Primary Mrs. Biglands ( melissa.biglands@his-xian.com ) if you would like more information.

PYP Arts. After the Spring Festival break, the PYP Art Room will be doing a fashion and costume design project, focused on using recycled materials. We invite all the learners and their families to collect as much recycled materials as possible, and bring them to the PYP Art Room at school. Our PYP Art Teachers are looking for old clothes, paper, cardboard, magazines, plastic bottles, bottle and jar tops, plastic packets, old CDs and any other recycled materials. Please contact Mr. Trull ( dylan.trull@his-xian.com ) if you would like more information.

Thanks again for your continuing support.

Yours,

Francesco Masetti-Placci
