2024-25 PYP Academies launched

Dear Parents and friends

PYP Academy.  In October, we successfully launched our 2024-25 academies, an initiative made possible by the exceptional contributions of two parent volunteers, alongside our dedicated Visual Arts and Music teachers. Their efforts have significantly enhanced the quality of our programs, fostering an enriching environment for our students. Below are some of the exciting highlights from the first two weeks!

In our recent Visual Arts Academy class, Year 3-6 students explored the artwork of "Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte" and applied the technique of pointillism to create artworks. Year 1 and 2 students have been experimenting with paint by mixing primary colors to create secondary colors, as well as creating abstract shapes and patterns. (Ms. Lily and Mr. Clark, Hanova Visual Art teachers)

In Computer Science Academy class, students have been learning general Internet concepts and safety and took part in networking a neighborhood activity. From there, they’ve gone on to  learn about Scratch and how to add characters (sprites), creating a conversation to pitch their passions. (Mr. Ashok, Hanova parent volunteer)

After the first meeting of going over selected musical pieces and music scores, Orchestra Academy students have already started practicing their own parts. Through this process, they continue to develop their self-management and collaboration skills while also focusing on improving their personal playing abilities. (Ms. Krystal, Hanova music teacher)

In our first two lessons of Experiential Science Academy, we explored forensic science basic skills by learning how to identify and dust for fingerprints from a crime scene. We also discussed cryptography, where we learned about the Caesar Cipher and practiced decoding hidden messages that might be helpful for solving some difficult criminal cases. It's been an exciting start, and the kids are loving their detective work!" (Mr. Essa, Hanova parent volunteer)

DP Music Field Trip - written by Ms Krystal Jiang.  Year 13 music students observed  'OMNI - Chang'an’ - China's first-ever site-specific conceptual theatre directed by the renowned Zhang Yimou. It is our earnest hope that this experience will provide students with further inspiration pertinent to Chinese musical traditions and enhance their engagement with their CMM project.

Samantha: The stage effect is extremely impactful, the props are realistic, and the performance is exquisite, which can intuitively and creatively convey the history and culture of Xi 'an. It also combines traditional Chinese music with modern arrangements, which is more in line with the aesthetic needs of contemporary audiences. It is very shocking!

Tony: ''OMNI Chang'an' unveils the unique charm of this ancient capital, which served as the seat of thirteen dynasties. Through this performance, I can see that Chang'an is replete with music and arts, and it stands as the starting point of the ancient Silk Road.

Upcoming University Visits.  Hanova is excited to host two upcoming university visits in the following weeks, designed to help students explore their higher education options. Over the following weeks, representatives from two leading universities in Canada will be visiting Hanova to provide insights into their academic programs, campus life, and application processes. Students from Y9 to Y13 will have the opportunity to attend information sessions, participate in Q&A discussions, and engage with admission officers to learn about potential study pathways. Parents are also invited to attend these sessions to support their children in making informed decisions about their future academic journeys.

Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award - written by Mr San Quan.  The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award program helps young people develop themselves while setting goals, finding passion and gaining recognition.
