Spring Carnival. Last Saturday, May 10th was a special day at Hanova School when we held our 2nd Annual Spring Carnival. Students, parents, and visitors were invited to join in this celebration of fun, food, and entertainment. This was also a fundraising event with the goal of raising donations for The Yellow River Soup Kitchen to assist less fortunate people locally. The day started with games and activities planned and organised by the Student Council and parents. These included various target and throwing games, craft activities, face painting, some wonderful food and the popular tipping Mr G off the chair! Following the fun and games, everyone eagerly joined in the more serious business of eating. The goal of feeding a hungry crowd was accomplished by the huge generosity of the Shangri-la Hotel who donated the wonderful buffet and fed nearly 350 people!
After lunch was the Talent Show, where our students had the opportunity to show off their creative skills. Congratulations to all students involved in the Talent Show. Students performed in front of a full auditorium, supported by fellow students, staff and parents. All performers should be very proud of their efforts, as should all those involved in the audition process leading up to the Carnival. This brought together the community with a truly international flavour, celebrating the talents and various cultures in our school. We are so lucky at Hanova to have so many talented students, and we look forward to watching and listening to even more of them next time.
An email from Tony Day. Thank you to all at Hanova International, including the children, parents and teachers, for choosing to support the Yellow River Soup Kitchen this year at your Carnival event. Although the weather was not kind to you, it was still a great turnout and a wonderful event. I had a thoroughly enjoyable day - despite not being very good at any of the games!
Your kind donation of 20,641 RMB was a tremendous achievement by all involved - a massive increase from last year and it will fund all of the meals provided at the Soup Kitchen for over a month!
As ever, it has been a pleasure working with you all and if we can be of any assistance in the future then please do not hesitate to contact me.
We wish you and all at Hanova International School every success in the future.
Tony Day, Yellow River Soup Kitchen
A good time was had by all at the Carnival and we are so grateful for the fantastic support from the broad community here at Hanova, especially considering the constant rain. Thank you to all those many people who helped make the day so successful organised by the Carnival and Talent Show Committees led by Maxine Lee (Talent) and Richard Gallerno (Carnival). People not only went home that day with good memories, prizes, and full stomachs; they also took with them the warm feeling that is earned by those who are charitable and willing to help others, and the joy of international friendship.
Music Solo Performances. Music students in years 7 - 13 are currently preparing for their major assessment task for this term, a solo performance in front of their classmates. A reminder that if students have access to an instrument at home they should also be practising outside of school. It is wonderful to see so many students working so hard on improving their practical music skills, and Ms Lee looks forward to hearing their polished performances in a couple of weeks.
Y2 Field trip. Year 2W and Year 2N went on a field trip to the Shaanxi Museum of Science and Technology last Wednesday. Students enjoyed exploring the hands-on learning environment exploring scientific and technological inventions and innovations. They particularly enjoyed each taking a turn in a flight simulator, and taking part in 3D Space Exploration! They brought their discoveries back into the classroom and continue to inquire about how things happen and why things work, as well as how these discoveries have impacted the world as we know it.
University and Careers Counselling. We welcomed this week a new member of staff to our team. Ms Sharon Zhu joins us as our full-time IB University and Careers Counsellor. Sharon graduated from Adelphi University in New York, US. She has been following up on individual students’ university requirements and will be meeting students individually next week. Hanova has also purchased the market-leading software and data-base called ‘Naviance’. This will open up substantial new opportunities for our students.
USA SAT examinations. Several parents have asked us about the SAT examinations required for entry into colleges and universities in the US. Sharon Zhu, has been finding out information for this, and we would like to report back to parents and students. Currently there are no SAT testing centres in mainland China; students have to go to Hong Kong, Korea or Singapore. In the future we understand that they will open a testing centre in Shanghai. It is recommended that students who are thinking of applying to US colleges and universities take their SAT two years in advance of graduating from Hanova. This means that students in Year 11 should be taking their tests this academic year.
SAT testing takes place six times a year internationally - usually the first Saturday of the given month. The next testing date is Saturday 7th June. If you need more information on SAT, please contact Sharon on firstname.lastname@example.org
