Upcoming Personal Project Parent Information Session

By Mr Martin Hughes

Dear Parents and

Book Fair. Beijing Star Kids Children's Bookstore are returning to run our annual Book Fair.  They will set up books for purchase on Monday, 20th and Tuesday, 21st April. They provide an easy way to get access to good English books for parents that you can actually select and look through yourselves. The Book Fair will be open to parents and friends on Monday and Tuesday from 9:00am to 4:00pm in the library. This is a chance to look through the books on offer, either with your child or on your own. The students can visit the Book Fair at any break time and the parents are welcomed at any time. If your child visits the book fair without you, then any book they select can be put aside for them. In that way they can write down any books they would like to purchase for you to approve and then they can return with the money the next school day. Please send any money in a sealed envelope with your child’s name, the amount of money and the book title (if known). If they are unable to bring the money before lunch on Thursday, 23rd April then the books will be returned to Beijing Star Books.

IB Diploma Programme Visit. Mr Kennedy Bwanga has been selected by the IBO to be an IB Diploma Programme verification visit team member.  He will undertake the verification in a school in Shanghai from Monday to Wednesday.  Although he will be absent from school for those days it is an honour for our school to have one of our staff selected.  As in all external opportunities Kennedy will bring back knowledge and skills that will enhance our provision and professional expertise at Hanova.

Assembly and Sports Day. On Friday, 17th April there is a Sports Activity day.  The morning will focus on the Primary and the afternoon on the Secondary. A separate email was sent home to parents on Wednesday with more details.

The Secondary event will involve the students in undertaking team building activities and fun events in their Houses.  They will rotate between 5 activities and individuals and groups can gain points for their House based on their performance. The Primary event will similarly involve students undertaking various activities.  The aim of this is for them to have fun in sports related events.  The focus on the day is on participation, and less so on competition.  Unlike in past years there will not be certificates or medals awarded.

There will be no assemblies on Friday.

Personal Project: Year 10 Parent Information Session. On Monday 27th April, students in Year 10 and their parents are invited to attend an after school session on the Personal Project in the library. As many of you may already be aware, the Personal Project is a 6-8 month individual project which students are required to complete in Year 11 of the Middle Years Programme.  The project is a great opportunity for students to realise their individual interests, and to exhibit their understanding of the concepts of the Middle Years Programme.  It is also great preparation for the demands of the Extended Essay at Diploma level.

During the planned session, parents and students will be introduced to the fundamentals of the Personal Project, see an example of a Personal Project, and ask questions of both the Personal Project Coordinator and a Year 11 student who has recently completed the Personal Project this year. We look forward to seeing you there.

New staff. We welcome the following people as additions to our Teaching Assistant team.  They have joined us to both cover for the 2 Teaching Assistants who will be starting their maternity leave soon and to expand the Assistant support available in the Primary and Art.

Ms Coco Lv has a degree in English and an MA in Applied Linguistics. Ms Crane Lin has a BA in English from Beijing Foreign Studies University.  Ms Ping Bonke has experience at teaching and Special Needs support at 2 international schools in her native Thailand, and also has a BA in Finance.  Finally Ms Cherry Feng has a BA in English Education from Xi’an International Studies University.  We welcome all four to our Support team.

Best regards,

Martin Hughes
