Since August, Mr. Brian O’ Connell joined as teacher of DP Physics and MYP Science. He is also the homeroom tutor for Diploma students.
They bring a wealth of experience and enthusiasm to complement the experienced teachers already part of our school. Please meet them at your earliest convenience and take a moment to read their bios on our school web site.
You may have also noticed that Mrs. Jacqueline Smith has been absent from the school in recent weeks: she has had to return to the UK for urgent medical attention. Consequently, the following appointments are made:
Mr. Robert Muntzer will take up the role of Acting Head of Secondary School in addition to his current role as Deputy Head of Secondary School and IB Diploma Coordinator.
Mrs. Sandy Trull will take up the role of Acting Secondary Pastoral Coordinator in addition to her current role as MYP Coordinator.
IB Diploma Parents and Managebac. As you know, Managebac is the platform where all the students’ IB Diploma work is set, submitted and assessed. Parents should have received access information from Managebac so that they can monitor their child’s progress. If you do not have access or have misplaced the information, please contact our IB MYP and DP Administrator, Mrs. Li ( lilian.li@his-xian.com ).
After the October National holiday, we will be having an IB Diploma meeting for parents in Years 12 and 13. The meeting will feature a review of the Diploma, the coming academic year and how assessment is undertaken by the students. We will inform you of when this meeting will happen.
Student Registrations and IB Student Directory. We are beginning the registration of our Year 13 students with IB to become Diploma candidates. Once completed the initial stages of registration, parents will receive a provisional statement of entry that they should confirm before we finalize their entries.
In a related development we are pleased to announce that we are going to activate the IB Student Registry portal next week, a service provided directly by the IB free of charge to all students in authorized IB World Schools. The IB Student Registry is a platform that links Managebac with the IB and with universities worldwide. When our students want to find out about or contact or apply to universities, they can do so directly by clicking on the university link on Student Registry. And when our students apply to a university, universities can also access the student’s Profile Page on Managebac to see what work they have been doing in their Diploma. This will enable our students to showcase their Extended Essays, TOK Essays, CAS, etc. and will give them an advantage over other student applications.
Activation will start for Year 12 and Year 13 students, and later this year we will be introducing also Year 11 to the IB Student Registry so that they can get similar preparation for universities.
MYP News. EAL after school programme will begin after the October National holiday. All parents who have children in English Language Acquisition Phase 1 and 2 will be invited to participate in this additional course and we strongly recommend taking advantage of this opportunity. This course will run from Monday to Thursday afternoons, from 4.15pm to 5 pm, and will require students and parents to arrange for their own transportation. Please register your intention to attend with our MYP Coordinator Mrs. Trull ( sandy.trull@his-xian.com ).

Recently, we extended our welcome to Mrs. Mashid Crockford, who joined us as new PYP teacher in Year 1, Mrs. Lainey Morgan, our new PYP teacher in Year 3 and Mr. Ryan Morgan, as new PYP teacher in Year 5.
Since August Mrs. Ashley Young, joined us as new PYP teacher in Year 2 and Mrs. Stephanie Batley as new PYP teacher in Year 6.
They complete our team of experienced PYP teachers and more international experience and a lot of enthusiasm to our school. Please take a moment to meet them at your earliest convenience and to read their qualifications on our school web site.
PYP News. As you know, the PYP ensures that learning is engaging, relevant and challenging, encouraging students to make connections between subject areas and to include experiential activities.
During this week, as part of their Unit of Inquiry on senses, Year 3 students worked on some outside projects and Year 2 students have planned their journey around Xi’an for next week.
ECAs. This week, we started our first block of Extra-Curricular Activities (ECAs). Our ECAs have always been very popular because the students get the chance to select some of the favorite experiences that they participate in at school, and this encourages students to explore and develop new interests and hobbies or practice and improve upon skills that they already know.
This year, our ECA programme includes lots of clubs that promote highly positive qualities such as creativity, learning, teamwork and physical fitness. Among the ECA choices offered during this block are: French, Yoga, dance, chess, tabletennis, football, Model United Nations, photography, and many more. Teachers hope that students enjoy their ECA time every Wednesday and that they bring home lots of crafts, skills or knowledge to show parents what they have accomplished each week.
We welcome further support from parents to continue to expand our students’ learning beyond the classroom. For details on our ECAs and to provide feedback please contact Ms. Petra in Primary ( petra.vejvodova@his-xian.com ) or Mr. Gallerno in Secondary ( richard.gallerno@his-xian.com ).
Hanova Academies. Thank you for your response in the Hanova Academies, showing the interest to expand our students’ learning beyond the classroom. We have closed our registration this week and will send confirmation of activities and enrollment during next week, with the detailed schedule of the proposed lessons. For any issue or further inquiry and interest, please contact directly our Marketing and Liaison Team.
Buses. In order to further improve the bus transportation after school, Bus Assistant-Monitors have been appointed from the senior MYP students and house captain team. These senior students will help our Bus Monitors, so please encourage your children to support and respect them.
We also remind to encourage students to get to their bus rooms promptly at the end of the school day to enable the buses to leave in a timeous fashion and to respect the guidelines of our transportation policy during the bus transfers.
Thanks again for your continuing support.
Yours,
Francesco Masetti-Placci
