Jr. Chang-an Cup Basketball

By Mr Robert Muntzer

Dear Parents and friends

Secondary Sports Day - Written by Mr Paul Robinson, Director of Sports.  Friday 13th May was the turn of the Secondary school to take part in Sports Day. After a whole week of expecting rain we were blessed with perfect weather conditions throughout the day. Students competed in a number of track and field events as well as basketball, dodgeball and tug o’war with points going towards the Secondary Sports Day house shield.

After a day of events there was time for the student forum to organize a “water fight” for the students which was great fun and the perfect ending to what was a great day for all involved.

At the end of the sports day Tang house was victorious; however there were also some outstanding individual performances with Tong Wang from Year 9 recording 12.1 seconds for the 100m and Peixin Lin (Year 7) jumping a staggering 1.6m in the high jump while Lucas Rice cleared 1.75m in the high school high jump.

The Middle School Male and Female Athletes of the Year were Tony Wang (Y9) and Jacqueline Zhang (Y7), while the High School Male and Female Athletes of the Year were Vincent Gibbs (Y12) and Alicia Chan (Y11).

PYP Student-led Conferences - Written by Mrs Jeannie Rice, Head of Primary.  On May 13th, the PYP held their student-led conferences.  This is a unique opportunity for students to share their learning with their own parents.  Unlike teacher conferences, these conferences are prepared and led by students.  The students show agency by making some decisions about the work they want to show, the interactive activities they want to complete, and the language(s) they want to use to communicate their learning.  This is a favorite conference of the year!  It is such a pleasure to see the confidence of students as they share with their parents.  It is amazing to see the look of delight on the faces of parents and students as they 'walk through' their learning journey from the academic year.  We are very thankful to parents for taking the opportunity to set aside time to come and celebrate learning with your child(ren).  It was great to have you on campus for this event!

Jr. Chang’an Cup Basketball - Written by Mr Paul Robinson, Director of Sports.  The PYP Basketball season ended on Saturday 14th May with the Hanova Hawks visiting XLIS to compete in the Junior Chang’An Cup.

The boys team battled bravely against a team from XIS, almost wiping out the half-time deficit in what was a great comeback, however 2 late baskets by XIS left the Hawks with just a little too much to do. Congratulations to Abraham who was awarded a place in the tournament all-star team.

The girls made it to the final game against XLIS. This was a very close game and despite some nervous moments the Hawks were victorious by 20 points to 15. The girls were awarded with their winner’s medals and championship trophy which we look forward to defending in 2023. Congratulations to Alice who was awarded a place in the all-star tournament team.

Finally, a huge thank you and well done to Mr Dusan and Mr Jason for their dedication in working with both teams throughout what has been a successful year of PYP basketball. The future is very bright for our young Hanova Hawks!!!!
