For this unit of inquiry, students in year 5 have been working with the different states of matter in a hands-on way. When we think about gases, liquids, and solids, Year 5 has done more than just memorize vocabulary and write sentences. Working with a range of different experiments the students have learned how the periodic table works, why measurement and the metric system is so important to science, and they actually dove deep into scientific investigations. Making ice cream in class was a great challenge in this unit of inquiry as we looked at how removing energy in the form of heat from a liquid can create a solid. It was also a great way to create a delicious treat!
